Rajasthan is India at its most cinematic. Jaipur's Amber Fort rises from a lake, Udaipur's palaces float on Lake Pichola, and Jodhpur spreads beneath the walls of Mehrangarh in a wash of indigo.
The state is also the most comfortable introduction to India for first-time visitors, with a well-worn circuit of heritage hotels in converted havelis and palaces. In the Thar Desert, camel safaris camp out near Jaisalmer, and the Pushkar camel fair fills the town each November.
