Indonesia is an archipelago before it is a country, which is why the itinerary matters more here than almost anywhere. Bali is the well-known half — rice terraces, temple ceremonies and surf — but Java holds Borobudur and the volcanoes at sunrise, Komodo has the dragons and some of the best diving on earth, and Sumatra still has wild orangutans.
We plan Indonesia as one island done properly rather than three done badly. Flights between islands are short and cheap, but they eat days; the trips that work best pick two bases and settle in.
