Goa is two coasts with different personalities: the north is busier, younger and full of beach shacks and nightlife, while the south is quiet, palm-shaded and built for doing very little. Inland there are spice farms, Portuguese churches and the Mandovi river, and the seafood is the best in the country.
It is the easiest trip in India — a direct flight, no altitude, no long drives — which makes it the default for a family week or a first trip with friends.
