Japan is expensive, but not as expensive as its reputation — and the exchange rate has been kind. What two weeks actually costs from India in 2026.

Japan has a reputation for being unaffordable, and it is not cheap — but the two things people fear most, food and transport, are better value than they expect. The costs that surprise travellers are the ones nobody warns them about: the rail pass arithmetic and the hotel rooms that are priced per person.
A hand-built Japan trip starts at ₹82,000–₹98,000 per person for 7 nights, land only and based on two people sharing. That is roughly .
International flights, visas and travel insurance are not included.
The price excludes international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, meals not mentioned, and optional activities.
The best window is March–May and October–November. Travelling either side of the peak weeks usually means the same weather, lower hotel rates and far fewer people at the main sights — which is the cheapest upgrade there is.
7 nights is the sweet spot for a first trip: long enough to settle in, short enough to stay affordable. Five nights works for a short break if you stay in one area. Ten to fourteen nights lets you slow down and add a second region — and because the per-night cost barely changes, the long trip is better value per day.
The Japan Rail Pass used to be an automatic buy and no longer is: at current prices, a 14-day pass only pays off if you are doing a lot of long-distance travel. For a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip, individual tickets usually win. Also, business hotels price per room while ryokans price per person with dinner and breakfast — the ryokan looks expensive until you count the meals.
