Zanzibar is the beach half of a Tanzania trip: powder-white sand at Nungwi and Kendwa, the tidal flats and kitesurfing at Paje, and Stone Town's labyrinth of carved doors, spice markets and the old slave market. The snorkelling and diving off Mnemba atoll are excellent.
It is also the perfect decompression after a safari — four nights here after the Serengeti is the shape most of our Tanzania trips take.
