Tuscany is the countryside people mean when they say Italy: the Val d'Orcia's cypress-lined roads, Siena's shell-shaped piazza, San Gimignano's towers, and the wine country of Chianti and Montalcino. Florence is the anchor and deserves two days of its own.
The way to do it is slowly, from one agriturismo base, driving to a different hill town each day and stopping for lunch. Rushing Tuscany defeats the purpose.
