Phuket is the Andaman's hub and, done properly, still excellent. Patong is the party strip and easy to avoid; Kata, Kata Noi and Nai Harn are the beaches worth staying on, and the old town's Sino-Portuguese shophouses are a genuinely good afternoon.
It is the launch point for Phang Nga Bay, the Phi Phi islands and Koh Yao Noi, so most people use it as a base rather than a destination. We pick the beach to match the trip.
