Meghalaya is the northeast at its most extraordinary: the double-decker living root bridges grown over centuries at Nongriat, the crystal-clear Umngot river at Dawki where boats appear to float on nothing, Mawlynnong — Asia's cleanest village — and Cherrapunji's waterfalls.
Shillong is the base and the music is genuinely good. It is a walking destination more than a sightseeing one, and the northeast rewards travellers who take their time.
