Kashmir is the valley everyone pictures when they picture India at its most beautiful: a shikara on Dal Lake at dawn, the Mughal gardens of Srinagar, tulips in April, and Gulmarg and Pahalgam's meadows under pine and snow.
The houseboat stay is the signature, and it is genuinely lovely when it is the right boat. We plan around the weather windows — spring for the gardens, winter for Gulmarg's skiing, which is some of the best in the Himalaya.
